The tour will lead you through the stunning scenery of the Alta Murgia National Park, a natural rural park.
The tour starts in Gravina in Puglia, a town of 45,000 inhabitants, 350 meters above sea level, an important center full of history and traditions. The town has been colonized by many populations: the Greek and later the Romans, the Byzantines and then the Lombards, the Normans and the Swabian, the Angevin, the Aragonese and finally the Bourbons. Learn about over 2500 years of history walking through the streets of the Old Town, visiting the Gravina “canyon” and strolling on the Botromagno hill.
The journey continues with a tour of Poggiorsini and of the Murge plateau, declared National Park in 1994, with its unique flora and fauna, with its typical Masserie (farmhouses), jazzi (a rural sheep shelter) and neviere (ancient underground storage for the snow), all places of undeniable charm.
The third stage of the tour will be the city of Altamura, with its charming medieval cloisters and the Cathedral. You can admire the megalithic walls, the Dinosaur Park (one of the largest in Europe for its footprints), and the cave of the Prehistoric Altamura Man (a well preserved hominid skeleton, who lived 150,000 years ago). The smell of the freshly baked Altamura bread, the only Dop baked product in Europe, will accompany you along the street of Altamura.
The tour ends in the city of Matera, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Will be visiting the Sassi, a unique prehistoric cave dwellings that has been the location of famous film-maker (including Mel Gibson "The Passion"). The city boasts one of the most beautiful town centers in the south of Italy.
