Notte della Taranta

Notte della Taranta is the highlights of the Apulian summer. It is the greatest musical festival dedicated to the revival of Salentine pizzica and to its combination with other music genres, from world music to rock, from jazz to symphonic music. Before the big final concert in Melpignano on August 22nd, there are many other concerts in which artists and groups give life to an extraordinary show that each year hosts some of the most representative pizzica music player.

The festival was born in 1998 involving the town part of the Grecìa Salentina (the Griko-speaking area in the peninsula of Salento) Calimera, Carpignano Salentino, Castrignano Salentino, Corigliano d'Otranto, Cutrofiano, Martignano, Martano, Soleto, Sternatia, Zollino and Melpignano. Recently other towns are taking part of these amazing shows such as Cursi, Galatina, Alessano, Andrano, the area of Capo di Leuca and Otranto. The "tarantism" is a cultural phenomenon that, despite the progressive depletion in its ritual forms (those observed and masterfully investigated by Ernesto De Martino in Salento, 1959), continues to offer its vitality: literature is still investigating the world of the venomous bite and its therapy. It stands out the variety of approaches and themes that characterize the literature: music and dance elements, the psychological and psychiatric contribution, anthropological interpretation and the study of ancient sources.

During the Taranta week it is a “must” a day's visit to Lecce's Old Town and spending few days on the Caribbean beaches of Otranto.
