This tour explores the favorite spots of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, one on the most influential monarch in the Apulian territory.
The tour begins with the visit of Castel del Monte, the fascinating octagonal castle built by the Emperor who used it as his hunting refuge. The unusual shape of the castle (an octagonal prism with eight towers built in a perfect circle) has always fascinated historians for its mysterious symbolism. The castle, built on top of Monte Caccia at 700 metres above sea level, has an incredible view of the surrounding landscape.
The journey continues into the beautiful Barletta, famous for its “Challenge of Barletta”, the battle between Ettore Fieramosca and the French troops. This historical event is still remembered every year. You can also visit the Castle, the Cathedral, San Sepolcro’s Church, the Colossus of Barletta and the famous archeological site of Cannae, where the legendary Hannibal defeated the Romans in 216 BC.
Travelling towards south we reach Trani, the charming city with the famous cathedral situated near the sea. Walking through the characteristic and well-preserved town center, you can admire many high-classes palaces belonging to different historical period, the Colonna Monastery and the Fortress.
Last stage of the tour will be Bari, the Apulian capital. The city, as well as being a busy shopping center, is renowned to be the city of Saint Nicholas, a passage to the East. From the monumental seafront you can enter the town center, where you can visit the Cathedral, the Basilica of Saint Nicholas and the Norman Castle, all monuments of historical and religious importance.
