ITINERARIES AND TOURS

The charm of Valle d'Itria

The Valle d’ Itria represents the heart of Apulia, for its geographical position in the middle of the Region, and also because it embodies all the characteristics of this wonderful land. It has a delightful countryside dotted with monumental olive trees, Masserie (farmhouses) and Trulli (the typical ancient Apulian small round stone houses with a conical roof). The beautiful shores will delight with their crystal blue sea, and the traditional Mediterranean cuisine is a “must try” of these lands.

The tour starts with the visit of Polignano and Monopoli, beautiful towns with crystalline waters on the northern coast. Polignano is situated on a rock overlooking the sea, along the Via Traiana; it has a characteristic town centre and many bays, which every year host international dive competitions. The Benedictine Abbey, situated in one of the town’s bay, is worth a visit.

Travelling south you’ll visit Monopoli, with its impressive castles and palaces. Then the tour moves to Fasano, a town renowned for its Zoo, one of the most important in Europe, for it Selva – a natural reserve - as well as for the nearby thermal baths of Torre Canne. The next stage of the tour is Ostuni, also called the “White City”, for its white walls and its typically white-painted architecture. Ostuni is regarded as an architectural jewel, boasting one of the most beautiful bays in Apulia, including the Natural Reserve of Torre Guaceto.

The tour leaves the coastal area and moves into the hinterland, travelling through endless olive groves, Masserie and Trulli. Cisternino is the first town that we find on the way, included, with the town of Locorotondo, in the “Cento Borghi più belli d’Italia”(Houndred Most beautiful Towns in Italy). The journey continues to the unique Alberobello, renown worldwide for its Trulli, part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

The tour ends with the visit to the Grotte di Castellana, the most remarkable karst cave system in Italy.
