The Salento is the area in Apulia that has a strong local identity, with its own culture and unique lifestyle. Lecce is the capital of the area, a peaceful and at same time vibrant city of 100,000 inhabitants, which town center (one of the most beautiful in Italy) is full of Baroque treasures. For this reason is called the "Florence of the South".
The spectacular Piazza Duomo, the Basilica of Santa Croce, the several churches, palaces, city’s gates and the Roman amphitheater, make Lecce an international touristic city, rated by Lonely Planet in the top 10 Italian city to visit.
From Lecce the sea is easy accessible from many directions, a sea that with its beauty and crystalline waters is easily compared with the one of the neighboring Greece.
From Lecce then, you can set out for the most beautiful seaside resort in southern Italy: Otranto, the eastern Italian city, with the stunning Alimini beach and lakes, as well as the old town standing like a fortress on sea; then, moving south on the Adriatic coast, travelling on one of the most beautiful roads of Europe, in a barren but charming landscape, there are the towns of Santa Cesarea Terme and Castro, with its famous Zinzulusa sea caves; finally there is Leuca, at the extreme end of Apulia, characterized by many nineteenth-century mansions. Worth to visit is also Ciolo, just before Santa Maria di Leuca, with its stunning fjord.
Going up the Ionian coast, we’ll meet the bustling and trendy Gallipoli, and the unspoiled bay of Porto Selvaggio. There is just many places to choose from, with pristine beaches and inlets lapped by the turquoise sea. Galatina and its wonderful Gothic church of Santa Caterina will be the last visit in the hinterland.
